2023 RE-CONNECT 《Farewell, Outsiders, Tao: From Cultural Identity to Social Relations》 in dialogue between Chinese and German writers

Introduction

Exploring origins and belonging, we constantly search for the footsteps of our ancestors and the roots of our cultural identity.Embracing love and loss, we continue to delve into the gradually fading memories of our family history. From Germany to China, from family to lineage, from cultural identity to social relationships, each of our stories contributes to a vast collective memory. Where do these stories begin? And how do “I” find my place among them?
Yannic Han Biao Federer’s novel “TAO” is a story about origins and belonging, love and loss. It follows his search for traces along the fractures of his biography and the gaps in history, in Germany and Hong Kong. He started writing in order to make sense of his own family history. His novel “TAO” asks questions about how to narrate collective memory, who does memory belong to, and what is the commitment of memory.
On September 16, Yannic Han Biao Federer, the winner of the 2022 Text Game Award, will be visiting Chengdu. We have invited translator and writer Li Hao, as well as novelist, playwright, and poet Yu Song, to engage in a dialogue with him. The authors will discuss and share their perspectives on topics such as cultural identity and social relationships.
