Born in Heidelberg, Germany, in 1964. He holds a BFA from the University of Oxford (Ruskin School of Fine Arts) and an MFA from Hunter University in New York, and currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. Herring’s early work was the creation of works through weaving, in which he weaved a transparent and reflective polyester film into figures, clothes and furniture. Since 1998, Herring has been working with strangers on the street to create stop-motion videos and participatory performances, each of which is unexpected and unpredictable. After that, Herring showed a different kind of creation through photography, where he meticulously photographed from all possible angles, then cut and pasted the photograph onto the subject sculpture, full of strong visual tension. Oliver Herring has had his own solo exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Guggenheim Museum, the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York, and a number of other art galleries.
