Kentaro Taki manipulates video and object fragments by using collage and cut-and-cut methods to distort and transcribe symbols and codes that exhibit structure and coherence in media society and urban space. For his audience, Kentaro Takaki tries to provide a trigger point to consider the contradictions of mutual surveillance or division of society by utilizing machine vision/eye machines. Born in Osaka, Japan in 1973, Kentaro Taki, completed his MFA in the Department of Imaging Arts and Sciences at Musashino Art University. In 2002-2004, he participated in the Artist Study Abroad Program of the Agency for Cultural Affairs of Japan, and received a grant from the POLA Art Foundation Overseas Research Program, spent time at the Karlsruhe State School of Design (HFG) and the Center for Art and Media (ZKM) in Germany, and received his PhD from the Institute of Urban Innovation at Yokohama National University. IN ADDITION TO HIS ARTISTIC PRACTICE, HE WAS THE DIRECTOR OF THE TOKYO VIDEOART CENTER AND A LECTURER IN MEDIA ART AT THE KAWAGUCHI ART INSTITUTE AT WASEDA UNIVERSITY FROM 2005 TO 2014, WRITING ABOUT NEW MEDIA ART. He is committed to creating a network of alternative artists as well as innovative approaches. Kentaro Taki’s video work was included in Vidiot in Contemplation, a DVD of seven Japanese video artists, released by the VIDEOART CENTER in Tokyo in 2007. In addition, these works were included in the 2006 international video artist collection “CITY 2 CITY” released by the French independent DVD label Lowave.
