In The Future

Introduction

The future is a dream. For this work the artists borrowed the basic segments of The Infinite Column (1938) by Constantin Brancusi (1876-1957). The two segments they made are big enough for a performer to be on the inside, but only two arms are visible. The sculpture is covered with painter’s canvas and the performer invites people to write their ideas or dreams for the future on it. Afterwards, the work will be covered with written statements, phantasies, ambitions or expectations. Of course, not every dream will come true, but the future is made of hope, not fear.

Guda Koster & Frans van Tartwijk

Since 2015 Guda Koster and Frans van Tartwijk collaborate in their performances. The living sculptures used in the performances are produced together, and together they decide on movement, sound/music and location. Many of Koster and van Tartwijks performances took place on carefully selected locations on streets, squares or parks in Dutch, German or French cities. The sculptures/performers move and act: they chant, dance and speak. The amazed passers-by may wonder what the true nature of these appearances is: are they machines, performers, male or female?
This summer Koster & van Tartwijk are residents at the Chengdu A4 residency art center, and they developed four new performances that will take place on streets or parks in Chengdu.
