Youth in History

Introduction

Youth in history is an epic of people discovering and sharing with each other, gaining strength and connecting together, across generations, geographies and cultures.
In the low-hanging night of the Luhu Chemical Plant, Zhao Chuan and Kwandiswa James will come together on the set, and Anuja Gosaka and Pier Angelo Zavaglia will hook up through multimedia interactions. With their different colors, accents, laughter and pain, they travel across four continents and five countries, crossing long borders and heavy barriers, trying to break away from their isolated existence and struggles to find a common destiny and an emotional resonance that can connect them.

The voyage begins with a look back, with stories of people from different parts of the world who have been toughened and battered by life, of people who have struggled to find their way through the oceans of history, and of their youth. The interviewees include a South African dreamer, musician and activist, a Bollywood actor and rapper born an Indian Muslim, a Chinese New Wave artist of the 1980s, and a Venezuelan immigrant mother who traveled across the sea.

Interviews with these figures connect the efforts of seemingly unattainable people, and even more so, connect a common history – one in which the survivors stand up from the brutal, or melancholic, or passionate waves of youthful practice and history.
